Hybrid Heating System Powers New 145-Bed Staffordshire Care Facility
Modutherm are proud to have supplied a comprehensive heating solution for a new 145-bed care facility in Staffordshire. The Genesis WM boiler and AW Monobloc 90kW heat pump were selected due to their exceptional efficiency and reliability. This project demonstrates how combining high-performance condensing boilers with renewable heat pump technology can deliver sustainable, cost-effective heating for large-scale care facilities.
The care home required a complete heating and domestic hot water system that would provide reliable, round-the-clock comfort for residents whilst significantly reducing carbon emissions and energy costs. With care facilities facing increasing pressure to operate sustainably, the client needed a solution that wouldn't compromise on performance.
The hybrid system tackles these challenges head-on, featuring three Genesis 120kW wall hung fully modulating condensing boilers on a free-standing cascade frame, complemented by an AW Monobloc 90kW air source heat pump and comprehensive hot water storage.
The Genesis WM boiler delivers outstanding performance with a gross seasonal efficiency of 96.3% and an impressive 10:1 turndown ratio. This turndown capability is crucial for care facilities - rather than cycling on and off inefficiently, the boilers can reduce output to just 10% of maximum capacity. This means they operate in their most efficient range even during low-demand periods such as milder weather or overnight, significantly minimizing gas consumption and running costs.
The AW Monobloc 90kW heat pump provides the renewable element of the system, achieving a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of up to 4.5. This means it delivers 4.5 units of heat energy for every unit of electricity consumed. The heat pump installation includes an 800-litre air source buffer vessel for optimal system performance, whilst two Juniper indirect cylinders, each with 1500-litre capacity, ensure ample domestic hot water reserves during peak demand.
By integrating renewable heat pump technology with high-efficiency condensing boilers, the facility substantially reduces its reliance on fossil fuels whilst lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The intelligent system design ensures optimal performance across all operating conditions - the boilers' exceptional turndown ratio minimizes gas consumption during lower demand periods, whilst the heat pump provides efficient base load heating.
The cascade boiler configuration provides built-in redundancy, critical for care facilities where heating system failures simply aren't an option. If one boiler requires maintenance, the others continue to serve the building, ensuring residents remain comfortable year-round.
The installation marks a significant step in delivering sustainable heating solutions for the care sector. With exceptional efficiency, intelligent controls and proven reliability, this hybrid system combined with Modutherm's comprehensive expertise will help create a comfortable, energy-efficient environment for residents for years to come. This project highlights Modutherm's commitment to providing innovative heating solutions for commercial and care applications.
