FAQs
Why does heat exchanger material matter in a commercial boiler?
The heat exchanger is the component through which combustion gases transfer heat into the heating circuit. Stainless steel heat exchangers offer superior resistance to corrosion compared to cast iron or aluminium alternatives, which is particularly important in condensing boilers where acidic condensate is produced during operation. All Genesis condensing boilers feature stainless steel heat exchangers, contributing to long-term reliability and reduced maintenance requirements.
What is a modular boiler configuration?
A modular configuration uses multiple boilers operating together as a single system, allowing output to be matched closely to demand at any given time. When heating loads are low, only one or two units fire; as demand increases, additional modules are brought on. This avoids the inefficiencies associated with a single large boiler cycling on and off at partial load, and also provides built-in redundancy — if one unit requires servicing, the remaining modules can continue to provide heat.
Are commercial boilers suitable for use alongside heat pumps?
Gas boilers can be integrated with air source heat pumps in a hybrid heating system. In such arrangements, the heat pump handles the base load at higher efficiency, with the boiler providing supplementary output during periods of peak demand or very low outdoor temperatures. This is a practical approach for buildings where a full heat pump system is not yet viable, allowing decarbonisation to be phased over time.
What maintenance does a commercial boiler require?
Commercial gas boilers should be serviced annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Routine maintenance typically includes inspection of the heat exchanger, burner, flue, condensate trap, and controls, as well as combustion analysis to verify efficient operation. The stainless steel heat exchangers in the Genesis range are designed to minimise corrosion-related issues, but regular servicing remains essential to maintain efficiency, safety, and warranty cover.
What does ErP mean in relation to commercial boilers?
ErP stands for Energy-related Products, referring to the EU directive that sets minimum energy efficiency standards for heating appliances. Under ErP, boilers are rated on a seasonal efficiency scale, with higher-rated products carrying lower running costs and a smaller carbon footprint. All Modutherm Genesis condensing boilers comply with ErP requirements, with the stainless steel heat exchanger design contributing to high seasonal efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions.
